DFM announces resignation

Deputy First Minister Jim Wallace has today announced his resignation.

He is to stand down as leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats who are partners with the Scottish Labour Party in the coalition which forms the Scottish government.

The Partnership Agreement between the parties states that the Liberal Democrat leader will be appointed DFM.

Mr Wallace, the MSP for Orkney, who is also Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning, has been DFM in successive administrations since the Executive was first established in 1999.

He will stand down once a successor has been elected this summer.

Mr Wallace also said he will relinquish his role as an MSP and leave the Scottish Parliament at the next election in 2007.
