Ferguson today announced the appointment of Ian Barr to the
Board of Trustees of the National Galleries of
Scotland.
Ian Barr is a practising artist and a
graduate of Glasgow School of Art. Mr Barr currently works
as an education and cultural policy consultant.
His experience is wide ranging and includes having
worked with the British Council, EU Comenius Projects, the
UK Government's Department for International Development,
Liverpool's successful bid to be City of European Culture
2006, and with UNESCO as a Specialist Adviser.
Ian also acts in a research consultancy capacity with
the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Until the
creation of OFCOM, he was Chair of the Independent
Television Commission's Education Advisory Committee and
was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Campaign for
Drawing.
Mr Barr declared no political activities within the last
five years and holds no other Scottish Ministerial
appointment.
This appointment will be for four years and will run
from March 1, 2005 to February 28, 2009. The post is
part-time and is not renumerated. The Board meets six times
a year.
The National Galleries of Scotland is a Scottish
Executive Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) with the
Chair and Board appointed by Scottish Ministers. It was
established in 1906 by the National Galleries of Scotland
Act 1906, as amended by the National Heritage (Scotland)
Act 1985. This provides for Scottish Ministers to appoint
between seven and 12 Members to the Board of Trustees,
including the Chair.
This Ministerial public appointment was made in
accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in
Scotland's Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political
activity plays no part in the selection process. However,
in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations,
there is a requirement for appointees' political activity
(if there is any to be declared) to be made public.
