Local museums launch 'treasure hunt'

15/04/2005

The Scottish Museums Council has begun a consultation on how best to identify collections in non-national museums and galleries that are worthy of formal recognition and support by national government.

Findings will be reported to the Executive on how the proposed 'Significance Recognition Scheme' might be implemented.

Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson said:

"Museums throughout Scotland hold collections which are of national significance. It is important that we should have a sensible framework within which we can support the valuable work of non-national museums.

"I look forward to considering the results of this exercise in the context of the wider review of the cultural sector being undertaken by the Cultural Commission."

The closing date for comments is Friday, July 8, 2005.
