Independent report on race matters

21/03/2005

The Lord Advocate Colin Boyd QC today informed the Scottish Parliament that he accepts all 12 recommendations in the first ever report by the independent Inspectorate of Prosecution in Scotland, which was published today. The report examines the response of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service on race issues.

The Lord Advocate, Colin Boyd QC, said:

"I would like to thank the Inspector for this thorough and encouraging report, which I very much welcome. Today I confirmed to the Scottish Parliament that I accept the 12 recommendations contained within the report, and I am pleased to note that work is already underway to address several of these.

"It is a positive tribute to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service that none of the recommendations are critical of the fundamental approach being taken to race matters. Scotland's prosecutors have for some time been taking steps in a long journey to continually review and improve the way they deal with minority communities. The publication of this report is another step in itself and is evidence of how far we have come. I am clear that there is much still to be done in this area, and the Inspector's recommendations are helpful in this regard."
