Minister visits Islay and Jura

Minister for Finance and Public Service Reform Tom McCabe today visited various facilities funded by the Modernising Government Fund on Islay and Jura. The Minister said:

"I am delighted to see for myself the excellent services that the 3IP Service Points and Dialogue Youth base are offering people on Jura, Islay and Colonsay. They all offer first-class, modern facilities and equipment and are very much focused on the needs of the people using them.

"The Scottish Executive is committed to delivering the best possible public services for people across Argyll and Bute, and we will continue to work in partnership with the Council, ensuring support for these remote and rural areas."

Mr McCabe met staff and young people involved in the Council's Dialogue Youth initiative, a one stop shop for young people, at the Bowmore Healthy Living Centre and also visited the 3 Islands Partnership (3IP) Service Point at Bowmore.

On Jura he viewed facilities and met representatives of the Initiative at the Edge and Jura/Iomairt aig an Oir Development Trust at the 3IP Service Point, where a range of first-class, modern services are available.

Finally Mr McCabe visited the Columba Centre, Lochindaal which focuses on teaching, and promoting Gaelic in all its forms. It is an important focus for economic growth and community development and offers the very bets in modern IT facilities,

Argyll & Bute Council have benefited from the Modernising Government Fund as follows:

MGF 1 - 3IP - £416,496; Dialogue Youth - £244,000;

MGF 2 - Total of £360,658 to work in partnership on Dialogue Youth, Land and Property, ScotXed; and

MGF 3 - £1,065,750 to cover areas relating to Customer First for period 2004/05 and 2005/06.
