Aye Write! reading together
22/02/2005
More than 100 Glasgow pupils had the chance to read all
about it today, thanks to a special event at Aye Write! -
the Glasgow book festival.
Read Together is the Executive's home reading initiative
and co-ordinators Lindsey Fraser and Kathryn Ross were on
hand at the Mitchell Library to show 150 primary pupils
just how much fun reading can be.
The pair will be dipping into the mystery book bag to
look at all kinds of books, talking about the people who
write and illustrate them and sharing some of their
favourite stories.
Lindsey Fraser said:
"By sharing stories and books with your child, you can
help them to develop their reading skills and ensure they
grow up to be avid readers.
"We want to open up the world of books for children
across Scotland by introducing them to the range of books
that are out there. Helping children to grow up with a love
of books is a great gift to give them."
Kathryn Ross added:
"The most important thing about reading is that it's fun
- and that's what we want to get across. Everyone enjoys a
good story and that goes for adults and children alike
which is why making time to read with your child can be
rewarding for both of you.
"By helping your child to develop a love of reading at
an early age, you'll be giving them skills that they'll use
for the rest of their lives. Hopefully today we can show
these youngsters just how much fun reading can be."
The Home Reading Initiative encourages parents and
carers to read with their child from a very early stage.
The dedicated website offers ideas about reading and
recommended books, alongside encouragement from Reading
Champions of all ages, from all over Scotland:
www.readtogether.co.uk.
The leaflet, Read Together, is given to children
throughout Scotland in their final year at nursery
school.
Reading Champions from all over Scotland promote the
aims of the initiative. They include the authors JK
Rowling, Aileen Paterson and Scoular Anderson, as well as
celebrities David Sneddon, Richard Wilson, Fred Macaulay,
Nick Nairn and Sandy Lyle.
