Latest figures on housing

Information on housing is published today in the statistical bulletin Housing trends in Scotland: quarter ending 30 September 2004. The bulletin presents quarterly information on public sector house sales, new house building and local authority lettings and evictions.

The main points to emerge from the bulletin are as follows:

New house building: 5,826 new dwellings were started during the period July to September 2004, 693 (11 per cent) less than during the same period in the previous year 6,364 dwellings were completed during July to September 2004, 222 (4 per cent) more than during the same period in 2003.

Sales of public authority dwellings: A total 3,006 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the period July to September, a decrease of 649 (18 per cent) on the same period in 2003. Figures do not include those authorities with total stock transfers in 2003

Lettings and evictions: During the quarter July to September 2004, there were 8,723 permanent lettings of local authority dwellings, 1,455 (14 per cent) less than during the same quarter in the previous year. There were 339 evictions of local authority tenants this quarter, 31 (10 per cent) more than during July to September 2003. Figures do not include those authorities with total stock transfers in 2003.
