National Museums of Scotland

Four new members were today appointed to the Board of Trustees of the National Museums of Scotland.

The National Museums of Scotland is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) with a Board appointed by, and accountable to, Scottish Ministers. The National Heritage (Scotland) Act 1985 provides for Scottish Ministers to appoint members to the Board of Trustees. The Board should provide leadership, direction and guidance for the public body, promote its core values, policies and objectives.

The new members are:

Michael Kirwan -

retired in 2002 after ending his career as Strategy and Business Development Director on the board of British Energy, where he worked since 1996. Previously he was partner at Management Consultants Deloitte, Haskins and Sells for 15 years, after beginning his career in Accountancy. Mr Kirwan is now a non-executive member of the Corporate Finance Advisory Board at PriceWaterhouseCoopers as an advisor on the energy sector. Mr Kirwan declared no political activites within the last five years and holds no other Scottish Ministerial appointment

Sir John Ward CBE began a career with IBM at its Greenock Manufacturing Plant in 1966. In 1991 he was appointed IBM Director of UK Government and Public Service Business after working for the company throughout the world. On his return to Scotland he has held a wide range of public appointments, such as the Chairmanship of CBI Scotland, Scottish Homes, the Scottish Qualifications Authority and currently with Scottish Enterprise and Dunfermline Building Society among others. He received his knighthood in 2002 for services to Public Life. He has declared no political activities within the last five years. Chair of Scottish Enterprise, he receives an annual remuneration of £37, 127.

Malcolm McLeod is currently Vice-Principal of the University of Glasgow, where he is heavily involved in the University's fundraising strategy. Over 30 years he has gained extensive knowledge of the Museums sector. He has been Chair of the Scottish Museums Council, Keeper of the Ethnography Department at the British Museum and Director of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow. He also continues to work on several projects in Ghana, where he set up a Museum for the Asante people in 1995. Professor McLeod declared no political activities within the last five years and holds no other Scottish Ministerial appointments.

Stuart Monro is Scientific Director at Our Dynamic Earth and a leading practitioner in promoting science to a wide audience. He has over 30 years of scientific research experience with the British Geological Survey as a Principal Geologist. Dr Monro is a Non-Executive Director of the Edinburgh International Science Festival and a member of the Scottish Science Advisory Committee. He has significant experience of teaching geology at all levels in the Open University and has been a member of the Council of the Open University (1994-2002). He is also co-convener of the Scottish Earth Science Education Forum. Dr Monro declared no political activities within the last five years and holds no other Scottish Ministerial appointment.

These appointments will be for 4 years and will run from January 2005 to December 2008 for Michael Kirwan and Sir John Ward, and from April 2005 to March 2009 for Malcolm MacLeod and Stuart Monro. The posts are part-time and are not remunerated. The Board meets six times a year.

This Ministerial public appointment was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.
