New Sheriff appointed

26/01/2005

Her Majesty The Queen, on the recommendation of the First Minister, has appointed Mr Vincent J G Smith, Solicitor as Sheriff of South Strathclyde Dumfries and Galloway at Hamilton.

Mr Smith will succeed Sheriff Simon Pender who transferred to Dumbarton last year.

Mr Smith (50) was admitted as solicitor in 1980 and began his career as an apprentice, then assistant with Hoey Carmichael & Co in Glasgow. In 1982 he became a partner in Lavery Smith & Co and has experience in a wide range of court and chamber work and has appeared in both civil and criminal cases in the sheriff courts. He was a temporary sheriff in 1999 and was appointed part-time sheriff in 2003.

Following the voluntary transfer of Sheriff Simon Pender, Scottish Ministers asked the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland to consider applications and make recommendations for filling the vacant post at Hamilton. The First Minister accepted the Board's recommendations and Mr Smith will take office shortly.
