Funding for green projects

13/01/2005

Scots are being encouraged to think about how the way they live impacts on the environment through £150,000 in Executive funding each year for the next three years.

The funding will be granted to national and regional projects of between one and three years duration that address the sustainable use of resources, energy and travel, and environmental justice.

A total of £1,697,891 has been awarded since 2001 . The scheme is currently supporting 20 projects, including an initiative, run by Friends of the Earth, in which communities have become more involved in local planning decisions and the Eco-Congregation initiative which encourages churches to think about the environment in their daily lives.

Environment and Rural Development Minister Ross Finnie said:

"The Executive is committed to promoting the efficient and environmentally sensitive use of our resources.

"In this round of funding, I am again inviting applications for national or regional projects which focus on our sustainable development priorities of resource use, energy and travel and on environmental justice.

"We have already seen good examples of original forward thinking among the applications submitted to this fund - applicants such as BTCV Scotland who are using their grant to raise awareness of biodiversity and carry out practical improvements in disadvantaged urban areas."

The Sustainable Action Fund was set up in 1996 to help fund sustainable development projects throughout Scotland. Projects recycling computer products, developing local food supply chains and promoting sustainable development to small and medium enterprises are among those funded to date. The focus is now on national or regional projects.

Applications are invited for national and regional projects. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 11, 2005.
