Festive season drink-drive figures
10/01/2005
A total of 750 people were caught drink driving over the
festive season compared with 770 for the same period last
year, according to figures issued by the Association of
Chief Police Officers in Scotland.
There were 155 positive breath tests following
collisions compared to 132 last year. A total of 21 people
were detected drug driving compared to 31 last year.
Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said although the
numbers had fallen, too many drivers were still putting
their own and other people's lives in danger.
He said:
"I welcome any drop in the number of drink drivers but
despite the clear message - don't drink and drive - it is
clear that too many people continue to put their own and
other people's lives at risk.
"A total of 750 people were caught during this year's
festive campaign, with an increase in the number of drivers
failing breath tests following collisions.
"One in six road deaths in Scotland are the result of
drink driving. Drivers also risk losing their licence,
massive insurance premiums, losing their job and possible
prison sentences.
"Everyone has a role to play in making our roads safer
throughout 2005. I appeal to drivers to drive at an
appropriate speed for the road and weather conditions, to
wear a seat belt on every journey and not to drink or take
drugs and drive."
