Scottish schools website a hit

13/12/2004

More than 127,000 users have logged onto Scottish Schools Online - the website which offers comprehensive details on every school - in the year since its launch.

The site, which will be updated with the latest exam and attendance results tomorrow (December 14), ensures that parents, teachers and pupils have vital information at their fingertips.

In total, the site has had 127,864 visits, an average of more than 10,000 a month. The highest number of visits - 16,720 - was recorded in March.

As well as exam results and attendance statistics, Scottish Schools

Online includes:

  • School leaver destinations
  • Number of pupils taking free school meals
  • Links to school inspection reports and school websites
  • Contact details

Education Minister Peter Peacock said:

"I am delighted this website has been such a success in its first year, providing continuous access to parents of information about their local school.

"The details available provide rounded information about local schools and are far more useful than simplistic league tables of exam results.

"Any serious observer of education knows a school's performance cannot be judged on narrow exam results alone. There are a whole host of factors which contribute to a school's success and only by looking at them all can anyone get a true picture of how a school is performing.

"Scottish Schools Online provides parents with a complete view of the performance of every Scottish school including progress made on previous years. It is easy to access and simple to use and I hope it will help to further strengthen the important links between parents and schools.

"I encourage parents to access the site and the links it givs to other information about Scottish education. We have a strong and successful education system in Scotland, but it will be even more successful with more parents taking an increasingly active interest in their school and their child's learning - this site helps them do just that."

Scottish Schools Online, part of the Parentzone website, was launched on December 15, 2003 and is run by Learning Teaching Scotland (LTS) on behalf of the Executive.
