EU Commissioner hears Scottish priorities

22/11/2004

Fisheries Minister Ross Finnie today highlighted Scotland's priorities for the December Fisheries negotiations in a meeting with European Commissioner Dr Joe Borg on the first day of his appointment.

Afterwards Mr Finnie said:

"We are committed to working with European partners to secure a sustainable future for our industry.

"Today's meeting was a good opportunity to underline that commitment and emphasise the contribution that Scottish fisherman have already made to conserve threatened stocks.

"Any settlement at December's Council must take account of the efforts made by our fleet.

"We will continue to take a prudent approach to fisheries management, respecting scientific advice where there is evidence that stocks are at risk while seeking to maximise opportunities to catch healthy stocks."
