Enterprise in education funding
16/11/2004
Additional funding of £44 million for the two years up
to 2008 for the Executive's
Determined
to Succeed (DtS) strategy for enterprise in education
was announced today.
Speaking at the Young Enterprise Scotland (YES) annual
conference, Enterprise Minister Jim Wallace said:
"Through DtS, we are helping to change the attitudes of
our young people, so that they have a better chance of
realising their full potential. We want to make sure that
they're better prepared - not just for the world of work
but, more generally, for life.
"This additional funding from the Scottish Budget
underlines our commitment to DtS and the long-term drive to
build an enterprising culture in Scotland, starting in the
classroom.
"This is a clear signal to the business and education
communities that DtS is not simply another initiative. It's
a long term effort to change attitudes amongst our young
people and is here to stay."
Mr Wallace was speaking at the Young Enterprise Scotland
(YES) annual conference which marks the second day in
Scotland of Enterprise Week - a UK wide campaign to promote
a culture of enterprise.
Mr Wallace added:
"YES is a key player in the enterprise arena and in the
success of Determined to Succeed, which cannot be delivered
by the Executive alone.
"YES is about partnerships - its success is built on a
network of voluntary advisers working with schools to
deliver meaningful opportunities. Partnerships with other
organisations, such as the Princes Trust, are providing
tailored learning experiences for young people with
specific needs.
"Through YES, school pupils have experienced wide
successes. Alongside DtS, YES is helping Scotland's young
people develop skills for a journey of lifelong
learning."
The Scottish Budget 2003-2006 allocated £40 million to
support Enterprise in Education. This was supplemented by
£2 million from the Hunter Foundation, match funded by the
Executive. The increased funding was announced as part of
the Scottish Budget on September 29, 2004.
This will make available additional funding of £22
million per year for 2006/07 and 2007/08, taking total
spending over 2005/06 to 2007/08 to £66 million.
The Executive's Enterprise in Education strategy,
Determined to
Succeed, was launched in March 2003.
