J8 Global Citizen Programme

17/11/2004

The J8 Global Citizen Programme education pack for Scottish secondary schools was launched today.

The first school-based initiative of its kind, it aims to increase 13 to 16 year old pupils' understanding of Scotland's role and responsibilities within the international community.

Pupils can also enter the J8 summit competition to win a place at the J8 summit. Competition winners from across the UK will gather at the J8 summit just prior to the G8 summit at Gleneagles in July 2005.

Deputy Education Minister Euan Robson said:

"Today's young people are tomorrow's leaders and this is a fantastic opportunity to contribute their views and innovative ideas for tackling issues which affect us all.

"The education pack allows our young people to develop their understanding about global issues such as health and poverty, trade, the environment and the economy.

"By working through case studies pupils can learn about some of the most important issues facing the world today.

"The energy, innovation and talent of our young people will help build a confident, ambitious Scotland. I look forward to showcasing this at the summit as part of our work to raise Scotland's profile as a destination, a business location and a place to live and work."

The UK will hold the presidency of the G8 in 2005 and the main event is the Summit which will take place in Gleneagles in July. It involves the Heads of State or Government of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the USA and the UK as well as the President of the European Commission.
