Arable area overshoot confirmed

08/11/2004

Scotland's arable overshoot for 2004 will be 1.41 per cent, it was announced today, a reduction from last year's level which was 2.2 per cent. A provisional figure of 1.7 per cent was announced in September.

The Scottish Executive Environment & Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD) will start making payments from Tuesday November 16. It is expected that payments to around 80 per cent of Scottish arable farmers will be made on that date. The remainder will be paid as soon as possible thereafter.

SEERAD will issue the vast majority of Arable Area Payments Scheme (AAPS) payments for cereals, linseed, oilseed, protein crops, flax and hemp and set-aside in the period November 16 2004 - January 31, 2005.

As with other main farm-based aid schemes, AAPS payments will be subject to modulation, at a rate of 3.5 per cent for this year. The AAPS payment rates allowing for the base area penalties for Scotland for 2004 will be as follows (£/hectare):

LFA

Cereals, oilseeds, linseeds, proteins, flax and hemp £214.69

Set-aside £214.69

Non LFA

Cereals, oilseeds, linseed, proteins, flax and hemp £233.65

Set-aside £233.65
