Call for partnership between government and licensed trade
26/10/2004
A call was made tonight for a partnership between the
licensed trade and government to help tackle three serious
problems facing Scotland.
First Minister Jack McConnell told the annual dinner of
the Scottish Licensed Trade Association in Glasgow that by
working together, government and industry can help
- cut the number of smokers
- move to end the culture of binge drinking among
young people
- stamp out the alcohol fuelled violence
He said:
"This is a time of enormous opportunity for Scotland.
Our economy is growing, education standards are rising and
there is a new confidence in the country. But, there are
some national problems that hold us back.
"Over the next two years, I want to see Scotland change.
I want us to ditch the culture of binge drinking, street
violence and poor health that blights our communities.
"Everyone in Scotland, including the hospitality
industry, has a responsibility to bring about that
change.
"We should all be working towards a healthier, fitter,
safer society.
"The long overdue reform of our licensing laws and the
decision that we make on smoking in public places will
impact not just on our pubs, clubs and restaurants - they
will help make Scotland a better place for all."
