Fireworks curfew comes into force

07/10/2004

It is now illegal to let off fireworks between 2300 and 0700 hours. The start of the curfew will be later on the four nights of the year when fireworks are used in traditional or cultural events.

On Hogmanay, Chinese New Year and Diwali setting off fireworks must stop at 0100 hours. On 5 November, the use of fireworks must stop at midnight.

Local authorities will have the power to grant dispensations from the curfew for special local occasions.

Welcoming the regulations, Finance and Public Service Reform Minister Tom McCabe said:

"I am sure everyone has enjoyed well organised fireworks display or used domestic fireworks safely at home. But the irresponsible use of fireworks can create untold misery for many people and pets in communities across Scotland.

"Introducing this curfew means that people can still enjoy fireworks but the anti-social use is made unacceptable."

People who break the curfew are liable to a fine of up to £5,000 and/or six months imprisonment.
