Care Homes Census results

The results of the March 2004 Scottish Care Homes Census are published today.

Key findings are:

· At March 2004, there were 1,548 Care Homes registered in Scotland offering 42,883 places.

· 730 care homes (47 per cent) were in the private sector, compared with 548 (35 per cent) in the voluntary sector and 270 (18 per cent) run by Local Authorities/NHS.

· 36,697 places in homes intended for older people, accounted for 86 per cent of all care home places in Scotland.

· Registered places in Care Homes for older people have decreased by 2.5 per cent between March 2001 and March 2004 (from 37,631 to 36,697).

· During this period, the number of older people living in their own homes and receiving more than 10 hours of home care each week increased from 11.4 clients per 1,000 population in 2000 to 15.7 in 2003 (an increase of 38 per cent).

· Following the introduction of Supporting People, 426 Care Homes de-registered between March 2002 and March 2004. These are still operational but are now classed as Housing Support services.

· The majority of these de-registered homes were for adults with learning disabilities (277 homes) and adults with mental health problems (82 homes).

Note that 426 Care Homes have de-registered since March 2002. These establishments are now more appropriately registering as Housing Support services and have been excluded from the figures in this publication. Further details are available in Annex G of the Statistics Release.
