Festival summit
27/09/2004
Culture Minister Frank McAveety chaired a festival
summit meeting today as representatives of the various
festivals and other organisations discussed ways to improve
and expand Scotland's festivals.
The festivals are keen to co-ordinate their efforts and
work together as part of any future strategy, and the
Executive has agreed, in partnership with Scottish
Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothians, Scottish Arts Council
and EventScotland, to support a study into various issues
which affect the festivals, including transport, festival
timetables, co-ordination and strategy.
Mr McAveety said:
"The festivals of Edinburgh are a genuine success story
and a national asset. To maintain that success they need to
plan for future growth in what is becoming a very
competitive global market.
"This Executive recognises it has a part to play in the
Festivals' strategic development and this is why I have
agreed, with our partners, to fund this study which will be
available within six months.
"The Edinburgh Festivals have a premier cultural
position throughout the world, but we cannot be complacent.
We will work together so that world wide audiences continue
to think culture, think festivals, think Scotland."
