Health Minister Malcolm Chisholm today announced two new non-executive member appointments to Western Isles NHS Board.

Mrs Christina Smith is an Employment Programmes Manager with Voluntary Action Lewis, a member of the Western Isles Training Providers' Network.

She is a committee member of a number of voluntary sector partnerships and networks. Her previous experience includes work with the Gaelic Development Organisation, An Comunn Gaidhealach, the NHS and the local Enterprise Company. She does not hold any other ministerial appointments.

Mrs Mairi Bremner is a fluent Gaelic speaker and a native of South Uist. She is a former member of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, having served as the Councillor for the Iochdar Ward from 1979 to 2003.

She served as Chairman of the Council's Social Work Committee for 15 years and is currently Chair of the Gaelic Development Agency CnaG, a position she has held since 1998. She does not hold any other Ministerial appointments.

Both appointments will be from October 1, 2004, for a period of four years.

It is expected that as a Member they will contribute around eight hours per week for which the annual remuneration is £4,090.

These Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with guidance issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Public Appointments in Scotland.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public.

Within the last five years, Mrs Bremner has obtained office as an Independent Councillor. Mrs Smith has not been involved in any political activity.
