Draft geographic information strategy

16/09/2004

The Executive has today published its draft Geographic Information Strategy.

The strategy has been drafted as a basis for discussion with a range of interested groups.

Minister for Finance and Public Services Andy Kerr said:

"Improving public service delivery is a key priority for the Executive. Geographic information, used effectively, has an important role to play in improving our policy making and service delivery capacity, in monitoring the effectiveness and performance, and in identifying and analysing specific problems.

"The efficient use of geographic information is of benefit to Scotland's economic and social development, health, justice, transport, education, environment and culture.

"Through common standards and data sharing, we can help ensure consistency of approach to data and information exchange across the public sector.

"I welcome the publication of this draft Strategy. I would encourage everyone with an interest in the subject to give their views, so that the final document can fully reflect the needs of Scotland for efficient and effective use of geographic information, and the benefits which that can bring to our citizens."

The draft strategy will be one of the subjects for discussion at a seminar organised by the Association of Geographic Information (Scotland), taking place at the University of Edinburgh Main Library today. It will be on the agenda at a number of other events in the coming months.

Contributions to the discussion and any comments are welcomed and should be sent to
