Scotland is all the richer for embracing and fostering
the talents and skills of players and coaches from all
communities, Sport Minister Frank McAveety said before
attending the UK Asian Football Championship final in
Glasgow today.
The final at Ibrox stadium follows three days of
competition among Scottish teams in the largest event of
its kind in the UK
Before the final Mr McAveety said that popular sports
can help raise awareness across Scotland to combat racism
in all its forms and break down cultural barriers.
He added:
"Scotland is committed to being a modern, welcoming and
open nation that encourages and benefits from the talents
of all who live here.
"Each of us has a role in tackling prejudice and
discrimination, and by supporting and promoting events like
this, we will tackle that prejudice and discrimination head
on.
"The Executive is committed to stamping out
discrimination in all of its forms. We will also continue
working to ensure more young people have more opportunities
to play more sports regardless of ethnic background.
"This event will highlight that participation in sports
like football is becoming increasingly popular in ethnic
minorities. We must all play our part in nurturing new
talent and provide the opportunities for that talent to
flourish".
The Scottish Asian Sports Association in partnership
with Glasgow City Council sponsored the competition.
