National Police Memorial

07/09/2004

A new National Police Memorial to officers who have died on duty was unveiled at the Scottish Police college at Tulliallan today.

Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson said:

"We owe a lot to the police officers in Scotland who maintain law and order and keep our communities safe, and even more to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the course of their duties.

"This memorial at the Scottish Police College will stand as a lasting monument to their dedication and service, and should act as an inspiration to all the recruits who pass through the college in future years.

"I am also pleased that it will act as a focal point for the families of those who have died and who continue to pay the price in terms of loss. They do so on behalf of us all. This memorial should be seen as a tribute to them as well."

The Scottish Police Memorial Trust was formed in January 2003.

The names of the officers will be inscribed on the memorial and full details of the circumstances surrounding their deaths will be kept in the Memorial Book housed near the monument.

The Executive has contributed £15,000 towards the cost of the memorial.

The inaugural National Police Memorial day will be held on October 3, and the First Minister will represent the Scottish Executive at an event held in St Paul's Catherdral.
