Determined to Succeed Strategy

19/08/2004

The collections of Glasgow's Hunterian Museum and the musical talents of the RSNO will be used to benefit young people as part of an innovative approach to enterprising learning.

They are among six projects sharing some £250,000 Partnership Innovation Funding through the Executive's Determined to Succeed strategy for Enterprise in Education.

Other winners are Edinburgh Business Development; Enterprising Careers, Strathclyde University; Apex Scotland Trust; and Achievers International, Ayr.

Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Jim Wallace said:

"We need to have a creative and imaginative approach to enterprise in education. That way, young people will be enthused by the business world and have the chance to realise their potential - at work and in life.

"Whether it is capitalising on the wealth of outstanding material at the Hunterian Museum, tapping into the talents of our national orchestra or offering new opportunities for young offenders, all these projects show new thinking and offer something a little bit different.

"Today's Innovation Fund awards are another step forward in creating a nation of more enterprising people."

Project Details

Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, Glasgow University

Staff will work with pupils and teachers, and with young people not in education, employment or training (NEET), to develop and produce an educational publication inspired by the collections in the museum's main and zoology museums.

The project is intended to create and inspire enterprising learning and teaching in schools, and encourage and nurture creativity, initiative and entrepreneurial development amongst young people.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra

The RSNO will offer a number of workshops linked to an enterprise challenge that will involve creating, recording and marketing a new piece of music.

Members of the RSNO will work closely with groups of pupils (around 20) and teachers to provide opportunities for pupils to develop the core skills of working with others, IT, problem solving, communication and numeracy.

Edinburgh Business Development

The project aims to raise awareness of and identify opportunities for business-education engagement, within the SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) community.

With EBD as a lead partner, it aims to work in partnership with City of Edinburgh Council, South Lanarkshire Council and Lanarkshire Business Gateway to develop a partnership plan that addresses local economic needs.

A database will be developed to manage those SMEs that have expressed an interest in working with schools and to match them with appropriate schools.

Enterprising Careers

The project will engage parents, carers and families through the development of activities and materials for each stage of pre-5, primary and secondary schooling (including special schools).

It will also pilot company-based enterprise events for employees who themselves are parents, and pilot an all-age Enterprise in Education community event.

It aims to emphasise the important role that parents, carers and families play in developing young peoples' attitudes and values, and in the decisions they make about their future.

Apex Scotland Trust Scotland

Apex staff will be trained to deliver the 'Engine Programme', which is designed for young dyslexic offenders and looks at personal learning styles and development through metacognition delivered via an enterprise programme.

Research has shown that these new training methods and support materials have encouraged greater participation from young people, and that they have progressed at a markedly accelerated pace into training and employment.

Achievers International

The project will provide students with experience of foreign languages in a business context, increasing their awareness of other cultures, citizenship and globalisation.

It will also empower them to develop their core skills and their own entrepreneurial attitudes, and provide them with an insight into business practices and procedures, including business start-up and management.
