Information on housing is published today in the
statistical bulletin
Housing
trends in Scotland: quarter ending 31 December 2003 and
31 March 2004. The bulletin presents quarterly information
on public sector house sales, new house building and local
authority lettings and evictions. It also contains annual
information on public sector stock, special needs housing,
changes to local authority housing list, houses in multiple
occupation (HMOs) and private sector improvement
grants.
The main points to emerge from the bulletin are as
follows:
New house building: 14,194 new dwellings
were
started during the period October
2003-March 2004, 2,111 (17%) more than during the same
period in the previous year. 11,509 dwellings were
completed during October 2002-March 2003,
263 (2%) more than during the same period in 2002-03.
Sales of public authority dwellings: A
total of 7,591 public authority dwellings were
sold to sitting tenants in the period
October 2003 to March 2004, a decrease of 2,424 (24%) on
the same period in 2002-2003.
Lettings and evictions: During the
quarters October-December 2003 and January-March 2004,
there were respectively 10,210 and 9,745
permanent lettings of local authority
dwellings, 675 (3%) less than during the same six
month period in the previous year. There were 247 and 250
evictions of local authority tenants
respectively during these quarters, 54 (12%) more in total
than during October 2002-March 2003. Figures do not include
those authorities with total stock transfers in 2003.
Houses in multiple occupation: In the year
ending 31 March 2004, 5,202 applications received in
respect of the
mandatory licensing scheme for houses in
multiple occupation. As at 31 March 2004, there were 3,509
licences in force, representing an increase of 1,587 (83%)
over the previous year.
Housing for older people: Public
authorities and housing associations provided 34,156
sheltered and 2,787 very sheltered dwellings for older
people as at 31 March 2003, representing 764 ( 4%) more
very sheltered units than at 31 March 2002.
