Ambulance service appointment

The re-appointment of Alan Lawton as a Member of the
Scottish Ambulance Service Board was announced today.
Health Minister Malcolm Chisholm said:
"I am very pleased to announce this re-appointment. Mr
Lawton brings a diverse range of skills and experience
which will be of continued benefit to the Scottish
Ambulance Service Board. I look forward to continuing to
work together with him in the vital task of improving the
health of the people of Scotland."
Alan Lawton is a Chartered Engineer. Following a long
career in the Royal Navy he joined British Aerospace from
1993 to 2000 working, mainly, in an international joint
venture company. He has particular experience of strategic
planning, procurement, man and project management. He takes
a keen interest in clinical governance.
He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical
Engineers, of the Chartered Institute of Management and of
the Institute of Directors. Mr Lawton does not hold any
other ministerial appointments.
Mr Lawton's re-appointment will be from September 1 2004
to August 31 2008.
It is expected that Board Members will contribute around
8 hours per week for which the annual remuneration is
£7,160.
The Scottish Ambulance Service provides pre-hospital
treatment and care for some 500,000 accident and emergency
patients a year. It also provides non-emergency services
for transporting patients to and from hospitals and clinics
for elective treatment and therapies. To meet those needs
it has an annual budget of around £120 million.
This Ministerial re-appointment was made in accordance
with guidance issued by the Office of the Commissioner of
Public Appointments (OCPA).
All appointments are made on merit and political
activity plays no part in the selection process. However,
in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations,
there is a requirement for appointees' political activity
(if any declared ) to be made public. Mr Lawton has not
been involved in any political activity within the last
five years.
