Antisocial Behaviour Act

26/07/2004

The Executive's Antisocial Behaviour legislation has become an Act following Royal Assent received today.

Work is already underway to prepare for the Act coming into force from the autumn onwards, with a range of advice and written guidance being made available.

Communities Minister Margaret Curran said:

"This is an important milestone as the Executive moves to implement our antisocial behaviour policy, and to improve the lives of people across Scotland.

"Work is already underway to ensure that everyone involved will be ready for the Act coming into force in the autumn.

"We are keen that we keep momentum as we move forward towards real benefits for hard-pressed communities."

The Executive is currently consulting on draft guidance on local ASB strategies, Antisocial Behaviour Orders, dispersal of groups, closure of premises, noise nuisance and graffiti removal.

There is also an extensive programme of training events for those working to deal with antisocial behaviour. Communities Ministers have been speaking at regional seminars and there are also masterclasses for frontline officers from local authorities, police and other agencies.

The Antisocial Behaviour etc. (Scotland) Bill was introduced in Parliament on October 29, 2003, and passed on June 17, 2004.

The Antisocial Behaviour etc. (Scotland) Act 2004 will soon be available at www.hmso.gov.uk.
