New fiscal for Inverness

28/06/2004

Gary Aitken, the new Procurator Fiscal for Inverness takes up post today, after being appointed by Lord Advocate, Colin Boyd QC. He succeeds Andrew Laing, who has been appointed Area Procurator Fiscal for Highlands and Islands.

Mr Aitken will hold a commission for Inverness Sheriff Court and will act as the personal representative of the Lord Advocate on a day-to-day basis. He will have local responsibility for the investigation and prosecution of crime and the investigation of sudden, suspicious and unexplained deaths in Inverness and will work closely with Highland and Islands Area Procurator Fiscal, Andrew Laing, who has full management and budgetary responsibility for the area.

Mr Aitken said:

"Although I will miss Caithness, I am greatly looking forward to taking up the challenge that a larger office will present. I am delighted that the next step in my career has allowed me to stay in the Highlands. At Inverness, I will work closely with the dedicated staff there to strive to provide a first rate public service."

Andrew Laing, Area Fiscal, said

"I am delighted to welcome Gary to the team at Inverness. Gary has, for the last four years worked conscientiously and diligently for the people of Caithness. He will bring to the Inverness District a number of new skills and qualities. He is an experienced prosecutor and I know he will work hard to further develop the already excellent working relationship we have established with criminal justice partners locally to provide the public with the sort of service they are entitled to expect."
