Residents contribute to East Kilbride nature area

14/06/2004

Winning local artists have been congratulated for their contribution to an information panel at John Struthers Nature Area in East Kilbride.

Primary school pupils and residents of Forefaulds Nursing Home created designs for the panel.

Deputy Environment Minister Allan Wilson unveiled the panel and met winning artists Lindsay, Zoe, and Graeme (all aged six) from Long Calderwood Primary School as well as Ms Mary Keir (98).

The Nature Area was established by the John Struthers Nature Area Management Committee to link local people with their environment. Support was provided by the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers with funding from the Scottish Executive.

Following a tour of the Nature Area Mr Wilson said:

"Too often we think of the environment as an issue affecting rural communities. In truth the environment affects us all.

"The John Struthers Nature Area is an outstanding example of how people can enjoy and benefit from our biodiversity even here in the heart of our urban communities.

"Protecting our precious natural heritage is a responsibility we must all share. If the new Scottish Biodiversity Strategy is to be successful many more communities, businesses and individuals should follow the lead set here.

"The John Struthers Nature Area is an outstanding example of the partnership between individuals of all ages, together the public and private sectors, pulling together to achieve a better Scotland."
