Additional funding for Tayside transport
26/05/2004
Funding to improve public transport in Dundee and Angus,
making it more attractive, safer and easier to use was
announced today.
Dundee City Council will receive £428,000 and Angus
Council will receive £321,000 for public transport
developments in 2004/05.
Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said:
"We need to make public transport more attractive, safer
and more sustainable in order to promote economic growth
and to connect our communities. This extra funding will
allow Dundee City Council and Angus Council to continue to
address these objectives.
"A similar level of funding, announced last November,
has been used towards a wide range of improvements,
including bus priority measures, transport interchange
enhancements and travel information."
"It will be for Dundee City Council and Angus to decide
how best to spend the funds. The key requirement is to make
public transport more attractive to use."
Today's award of £428,000 funding for Dundee City
Council and £321,000 for Angus Council comes from the Other
Public Transport budget.
Projects supported last year included major improvements
to Arbroath bus station, including re-surfacing and
provision of CCTV, replacing 60 life-expired bus shelters
across Angus (as well as providing additional shelters),
and a fully enclosed bus interchange at Ninewells Hospital,
Dundee.
By the end of 2006, Scottish Executive spending on
transport will reach £1 billion per year, of which 70 per
cent will be targeted on public transport.
