CCTV for all Dundee buses

25/05/2004

CCTV systems have been installed on all buses in Dundee, the first time 100 per cent coverage has been achieved in a UK city, as part of a £500,000 Smart Bus project funded by the Executive.

Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said:

"Dundee is now leading the way in the UK, with 100 per cent CCTV coverage on its buses. This system will deter those who cause trouble and also help people feel safer when they travel. This is the sort of initiative that encourages more people onto buses.

"Passengers want to travel on public transport that is safe and clean. Crime, vandalism and anti-social behaviour are greatly reduced by using CCTV cameras. Improving public transport is about investing in new facilities such as CCTV in order to deliver better, safer travel choices."

In total the Executive has awarded more than £12 million since 1999 from the Public Transport Fund to Dundee City Council for public transport improvements across Dundee.
