Agricultural and Horticultural Census

21/05/2004

The Scottish Executive today announced that the Agricultural and Horticultural Census will take place on the 1st of June and forms will be issued shortly.

All farmers should remember there is a legal obligation to complete and return the census forms. Returning the forms is particularly important as the introduction of the single farm register for business contact information takes place this year.

This will help reduce the burden of paperwork for farmers and allow savings to be made in administration. Complete and accurate statistical information will aid the successful implementation of Common Agricultural Policy reform and is important for the final GB Strategy for Animal Health and Welfare.

Notes to News Editors

1. Census forms will be sent to all but the very smallest ("minor") holdings. One third of these are included on a rotational basis.

Completing the Agricultural and Horticultural Census form is a legal requirement under the Agriculture Act 1947, non-repondants will be actively pursued.

Completed census forms must be returned to the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department by June 15, 2004.
