David Nicolson has been reappointed of

a member to the
Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Mr Nicolson, a

Chartered Accountant and former Managing Partner of KPMG Edinburgh, has been re-appointed for four years from May 16 to May 15, 2008.

The post is part-time and unpaid

for a formal time commitment of
four meetings per year.
Members are also expected to participate in the work of Committees established to deal with particular aspects of the Board's business, and are encouraged to visit the Regional gardens. Mr Nicolson currently holds no other ministerial appointments.

Under the terms of the National Heritage (Scotland) Act 1985, the functions of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh include maintaining and developing the collection of living and preserved plant material, carrying out research into plant science, providing public access to the Garden and a wide and varied education programme. The Garden comprises the main garden at Inverleith, Edinburgh and three Regional gardens at Benmore (Argyll), Logan (Wigtownshire) and Dawyck (Peeblesshire).

This Ministerial public appointment was made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.

Mr Nicolson has not carried out any political activity in the last five years.

The re-appointment brings the number of Board members up to a maximum of nine. The other members of the Board are:-

Dr Paul Nicholson (Chair), Ms Carole Baxter, Lord Charles Howick, Mr David Mathewson, Professor Dianne Edwards, Professor Paul Broda, Mrs Barbara Kelly and Professor Michael Usher.
