Executive wins with 'Life matters'

13/05/2004

The Executive-sponsored radio programming Life matters, broadcast on Scottish Radio Holdings' local radio stations seven days a week, has won a gold award at the SONY Radio Academy Awards 2004.

The Radio Academy Awards, sponsored by Sony since 1983, are regarded as the Oscars of the UK radio industry and were presented at a ceremony in London's Grosvenor House Hotel.

Entries in categories ranging across sport, news, music, features, entertainment, drama, and comedy came from BBC national and local, commercial and independent stations throughout the UK.

Life matters won the information category ahead of entries from BBC Radio One, Two, Four and Leeds-based Galaxy 105.

Life matters is a programming sponsorship which involves station presenters chatting informally about social issues that are the subjects of the Executive's mainstream advertising and marketing campaigns.

The concept is to inform the public about such issues during music breaks and which, because of the informality of the presenters, aims to reduce resistance to conventional advertising and extend the reach of the Executive's paid communications.

Subjects featured include domestic abuse, healthy living, fire safety, drugs and alcohol abuse, and road safety.

The programming idea was initiated by the Executive's marketing team who approached SRH senior management a year ago.

The programming format was jointly devised, and departmental officials and the marketing team brief SRH scriptwriters on each topic.

Life matters was first aired in September 2003 and is now one of the mainstays of support for the Executive's paid communications.

There were no other Scottish successes at last night's awards and no other government or local authorities were represented. Commercial radio took the majority of the awards, with BBC Radio 4 taking the National Station of the year award.
