SNH appointments

A series of appointments to the board
of Scottish Natural Heritage were announced today.
Amanda Bryan, Jim Hunter and Hugh
Raven have all been appointed to the organisation's board
while Janet Sprent, Keith Geddes and Lady Isabel Glasgow
have been re-appointed.
Amanda Bryan is
Principal of Aigas Associates
and former Development Manager with Ross and Cromarty
Enterprise.
She is Chair of BBC Scotland's Scottish
Rural Affairs and Agriculture Advisory Committee and Deputy
Chairman of the SNH North Area Board.
She does not hold any other Ministerial
Public Appointments.
Jim Hunter is a freelance writer and
historian, and Chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise
for which he receives £54,040 per annum.
. He is a Member of the Convention of the
Highlands and Islands and former director of the Scottish
Crofters Union.
Other previous appointments include
membership of the SNH North Areas Board, Skye and Lochalsh
Enterprise and Scottish Tourist Board.
Hugh Raven is Environmental Consultant
with the Soil Association and the Esmee Fairbairn
Foundation.
He is a former advisor to a team of
Highlands and Islands MSPs and specialist advisor to UK
Government Environment Minister.
He does not hold any other Ministerial
Public Appointments.
Professor Janet Sprent is Emeritus
Professor of Plant Biology at the University of Dundee and
a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental
Pollution.
She is a former member of the National
Environment Research Council, Joint Nature Conservation
Committee and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the
Macaulay Land Use Research Institute.
She does not hold any other Ministerial
Public Appointments.
Keith Geddes is a Policy Director with
Pagoda PR and a member of the Accounts Commission for which
he receives remuneration of £4,240 per annum.
He chairs the SNH Audit and Risk Management
Committee and is Chair of Greenspace Scotland.
He is a former member of the Scottish Arts
Council, Scottish Enterprise and Livingston Development
Corporation.
Lady Isabel Glasgow is Chair of the
Firth of Clyde Forum and Scotland's Moorland Forum.
She is also Chair of the SNH West Areas
Board and a Board Member of the Loch Lomond and The
Trossachs National Park Authority for which she receives
remuneration of £175 per day for a time commitment of two -
three days per month.
These appointments will be for three
years and will run from March 31, 2004, to March 31,
2007.
All posts are part-time and attract
remuneration of £7,484 for a commitment of three days per
month.
Board Members who chair other (SNH) boards
and committees are remunerated at a pro-rata rate for their
additional time commitment.
Scottish Natural Heritage is the
non-governmental organisation whose responsibility it is to
secure the conservation and enhancement of the natural
heritage of Scotland.
These Ministerial public appointments
were made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by
the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
All appointments are made on merit and
political activity plays no part in the selection process.
However, in accordance with the original
Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for
appointees' political activity (if there is any to be
declared) to be made public.
Hugh Raven has
undertaken political activity as a Parliamentary candidate
and branch chair of the Scottish Labour Party.
Keith Geddes has also stood as a candidate
in Parliamentary and Local Government elections for the
Scottish Labour Party.
None of the other appointees declared
political activity.
