05/04/2004

A strategic plan for the next four years aims has been launched by basketballscotland.

It aims to break down barriers and encourage people to play, regardless of gender, ability or ethnic origin.

Sports like basketball play a huge role in getting Scotland active, according to Sports Minister Frank McAveety.

Speaking ahead of the Scottish Cup Finals at Meadowbank, he said:

"We are committed to ensuring that Scotland truly embraces the 'Sports for All' ethic, and this weekend's basketball events reflect this principle.

"The Cup Finals have young people, men, women, senior players and for the first time wheelchair basketball league players all playing. This is a great advert for basketball and sport in general that people from all walks of life can participate and become more actively involved in sport.

"I wish basketballscotland and everyone participating every success today and for the future."

basketballscotland hosts the 57th Scottish Cup Finals at Meadowbank this weekend.

sportscotland awards an annual development grant to the basketballscotland, the sport's governing body, to develop the sport. For the last three years they have received £78,400 (01/02), £101, 500 (02/03) and £129,300 (03/04).
