Scottish Care Homes Census

The first results of the Scottish Care Homes Census, 2003 are published today.

Key findings which are published in a statistical release are:

At March 2003, there were 1,616 Care Homes registered inScotlandoffering 43,578 places.

740 care homes (46 per cent) were in the private sector, compared with 596 (37 per cent) in the voluntary sector and 280 (17 per cent) run by Local Authorities/NHS.

36,829 places in homes intended for older people, accounted for 85 per cent of all care home places inScotland.

Registered places in Care Homes for older people decreased by less than 1 per cent between 2002 and 2003 (from 37,149 to 36,829).

At the same time, the number of older people living in their own homes and receiving more than 10 hours of home care each week increased from 14.2 clients per 1,000 population in 2002 to 15.7 in 2003 (an increase of 11 per cent).

Following the introduction of Supporting People, 376 Care Homes de-registered between March 2002 and March 2003. These are still operational but are now classed as Housing Support services.

The majority of these de-registered homes were for adults with learning disabilities (243 homes) and adults with mental health problems (72 homes).
