Euro funding for Highlands and Islands

29/03/2004

European funding worth £8.7 million for a variety of projects across the Highlands and Islands was announced today at the Convention of the Highlands and Islands in Arran.

The latest round is worth more than £32.6 million when matching funding is included.

Deputy Enterprise Minister Lewis Macdonald said:

"I am delighted to announce today a further injection of European funding worth almost £9 million under the Highlands & Islands Special Transitional Programme.

"This latest round of funding brings support to a range of excellent projects, contributing to the local economy and improving access to and for rural communities.

"The successful organisations deserve great credit for the work that they have done to be awarded this funding. The real work will now begin to implement these projects."

Six projects will receive almost £9 million of European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) to help promote community facilities and business.

They include the Inverness Medicentre project which has been awarded £2.7 million.

Highland Council will also receive £1 million towards the construction of the Inverness Airport access road, and £737,500 towards the second phase of the A832 Achnasheen to Kinlochewe road upgrade.

The Highlands and Islands Special Transitional Programme was approved by the European Commission in August 2000. It has allocated around £185 million to support projects that contribute to the economic development of the area out of a total of around €300 million (£208 million) for the period 2000 - 2006.
