Honorary CBE ceremony at Bute House

16/03/2004

First Minister Jack McConnell today presented Professor Bernard King, Principal of the University of Abertay, with an honorary CBE at a ceremony in Bute House.

Mr McConnell paid tribute to the tremendous work Professor King has done to enhance the first-class reputation of Scottish universities, and his success in steering the University of Abertay to its present position as one of Britain's leading modern universities.

It is now recognised as the most improved university in the UK.

Speaking after the ceremony, the First Minister said:

"This is a proud moment for Professor King. It is also a proud moment for Dundee and for Scotland.

"The transformation of the University of Abertay into one of Britain's leading universities is one of Professor King's great achievements and it is right and proper that he is recognised.

"Professor King has done much to enhance the reputation of Scotland's universities, within the UK and in the wider world. He has also made a particular effort to attract students from poorer backgrounds into higher education.

"To accomplish so much and to contribute in so many other ways is a considerable achievement and this honorary CBE is in recognition of that."

The CBE is honorary as Professor King is an Irish citizen. He has been Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abertay Dundee since 1992. Abertay Dundee has improved continuously over the last four years and is now sixth among the top 10 modern universities in the UK. (Financial Times League Table).

Professor King writes and lobbies extensively on higher education matters and is currently a member of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council's Knowledge Transfer Working Group.

He was previously a member of the Executive's Science Strategy Review Group. He has operated as a consultant to industry, both nationally and internationally, and has used these links to develop a series of international relationships with Abertay Dundee.
