Jobs in Green Economy conference

08/03/2004

Scotland has the potential to become a world leader in the economy of the future, Deputy Enterprise Minister Lewis Macdonald today told the Forward Scotland 'Jobs in a Green Economy' conference in Perth.

The MInister outlined the potential for creating jobs across a range of sectors, including recycling and renewable energy.

He said:

"We are determined that Scottish businesses are able to take full advantage of the economic opportunities offered by fast growing and lucrative industries where we have real potential to lead the world - industries like renewable energy, recycling and the development and manufacture of cleaner technologies.

"This is why we are committed to working with Scottish business and others in developing a Green Jobs Strategy to drive this process forward. We hope to consult on this in the coming weeks.

"The drive towards sustainable development presents Scotland with an opportunity to lead the world in new and exciting sectors and industries; to create a more successful, dynamic and competitive economy while at the same time limiting our impact on the environment.

"We will work closely with the business community and others to make sure that Scotland is ready to take advantage of these opportunities."
