Proposals could benefit Scottish renewables

02/03/2004

Deputy Enterprise Minister Lewis Macdonald today welcomed progress in implementing proposals to benefit Scottish renewables developers.

The Department for Trade & Industry (DTI) today announced further details on proposed changes to the UK Energy Bill. Theses would allow the UK Secretary of State to cap or discount charges for renewable energy generators.

If passed in Parliament, this move could help the development of renewable energy in Scotland by ensuring that energy producers here are not charged more for the use of the UK electricity network.

Mr Macdonald said:

"It is of utmost importance that the new transmission charging regime does not have a detrimental effect on renewable energy development in remote areas.

"The proposed changes are an encouraging first step in developing a robust and transparent mechanism that will protect new renewables development.

"We have been working closely with the UK Government on this crucial issue for the Scottish renewables sector. We will continue to keep in close contact with the DTI, and with the Scottish renewables industry, as these proposals develop."
