A80 road improvements at Auchenkilns
24/02/2004
Transport Minister Nicol Stephen today visited the £25 million
improvement scheme at Auchenkilns near Cumbernauld where a
new junction is under construction to replace the
roundabout. Work is expected to be completed by summer
2005.
Mr Stephen said:
"The improvements we are investing in here
will help bring real benefits to road users.
Improving safety, tackling congestion and improving
journey times is good for business and good for the
thousands of people who use this road every
day.
"The work ongoing on the A80 is an important part
of our plans to improve the transport links in
central Scotland and will open up opportunities for local
and national business. The A80 carries some of the highest
traffic flows in Scotland and this work should remove a
major source of congestion.
"Byinvesting in our transport network we are
investing in our local communities and supporting
business."
The work will involve the construction of a
separate new junction to the north east of the
existing roundabout. Four new slip roads will be
built to connect with a new overbridge. The A73 and
B8048 will be diverted to connect with the new
junction at two new roundabouts either side of the
A80 which when the road is completed, will allow
A80 drivers to proceed straight through. The
existing A8011 slip road, to the west of the
Auchenkilns roundabout, which forms part of Low
Wood interchange, will be extended to improve
opportunities for traffic joining thte A80 from the
A8011.
Executive funding for the A80 Auchenkilns work comes
from the trunk roads budget. The design and
build contract was awarded to AWG Construction Services Ltd
last year.
