Procurator fiscal reporting event
13/02/2004
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service hosted an
event at Edinburgh University today for over 50 specialist
agencies who report crimes to the procurator fiscal.
110 investigators from environmental health departments,
trading standards, and bodies like the Health and Safety
Executive and the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency will
attend the event which aims to:
- improve awareness of the Scottish legal system and
provide a better understanding of investigating and
reporting offences to the Procurator Fiscal
- Provide an update on recent changes and
developments within COPFS especially relating to the
increased use of technology for decision-making and the
reporting of cases
- develop knowledge and understanding of the court
process and the role of the expert witness in a
trial
Solicitor General Elish Angiolini QC told attendees:
"Procurators Fiscal deal with a diverse range of crime,
such as pollution, environmental health matters, health and
safety, as well as planning offences and video piracy. Our
expertise is in prosecution , but events like this help us
deal more effectively with the diverse range of crime that
impact upon communities in Scotland. We want to work with
the specialist agencies to continually build up our
knowledge of the offences they are uncovering and the
issues that concern them."
A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive
said:
"We are very pleased to be involved in this event. There
are many benefits to joint agency working and this is a
useful opportunity to get together with other agencies and
look at best working practice."
