Minister in Norway to discuss salmon farming

02/02/2004

Deputy Fisheries Minister, Allan Wilson is meeting with the Norwegian Government to explore areas of possible co-operation in securing a long-term future for Scotland's aquaculture sector.

Mr Wilson will meet with Norwegian Fisheries Minister Svein Ludvigsen to discuss ways of finding long term solutions to the problems currently facing the European farmed salmon and aquaculture markets.

Particular areas of discussion will include improving market intelligence and better market forecasts to inform commercial judgement, and encouraging market discipline.

Mr Wilson's discussion in Oslo follows recent talks held with Norwegian Fisheries officials in Edinburgh. It is hoped that regular meetings will establish a spirit of co-operation between the Scottish and Norwegian sectors.

The current round of talks follow earlier Ministerial discussions held at the end of 2002 and meetings between Norwegian officials and the Scottish industry in November 2003.

Both Ministers will meet again in early May for further discussions.
