Rise in forecast farm incomes welcomed

29/01/2004

Deputy Rural Development Minister Allan Wilson today welcomed a forecast rise of 29 per cent in Total Income From Farming in Scotland for 2003.

Figures published by the Scottish Executive today also show a predicted rise in income at the farm level. Average Net Farm Income is estimated at £17,000 for 2003/4, which is up on the 2002/3 figure of £7,000.

Commenting on the 2003 farm income forecasts Mr Wilson said:

"The predicted rise in agricultural incomes in 2003 highlights increased prices and yields in the cereals sector along with continued improvements in the value of cattle and sheep.

"At £471m Total Income From Farming is at its highest level since 1996, and represents a rise of £106m for the agricultural industry as a whole since 2002

"We are determined to continue work on the Forward Strategy for Scottish Agriculture and use the opportunities associated with reform of the Common Agricultural Policy to improve quality and meet the expectations of consumers to ensure a secure basis for a profitable farming industry in Scotland."
