Chief executive appointed to Communties Scotland

23/01/2004

Angiolina Foster has been appointed to the post of Chief Executive of Communities Scotland, the Scottish Executive's housing and regeneration agency.

Her appointment - which takes effect today - follows an advertised open competition. The selection process was led by an independent Civil Service Commissioner.

Welcoming the appointment, Communities Minister Margaret Curran said:

"Communities Scotland is central to the delivery of our ambitious housing and regeneration plans. I am pleased that the agency has a Chief Executive with Angiolina Foster's wide experience. I know that she has a strong mission to make sure that the agency is successful at national and local level, working effectively with its many partners."

Mrs Foster's career began in local government, in Glasgow then in Edinburgh where she was Senior Deputy Director and then Head of Performance Services in the city's housing department. She joined Communities Scotland as a member of the senior civil service in November 2001. After secondment to the Glasgow Housing Association in 2002-3 she returned to the agency, and has been its acting chief executive since 15 September 2003. She is 47 and is the first woman to head a Scottish Executive Agency.

Communities Scotland is an executive agency of the Scottish Executive. Its 500 staff are civil servants, and work in eight locations around Scotland.

Its 2003-4 budget is £485 million.
