Grant for Burns Heritage Park

12/01/2004

A grant of £115,000 for the Burns National Heritage Park was announced today.

The funding package which will run for the next two years will help the Park to continue to provide visitors to Scotland with a great location to enjoy the life and work of Robert Burns.

Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport Frank McAveety said:

"It is fitting that in the coming weeks as we celebrate the Bard's birthday, that the Burns National Heritage Park in Alloway should receive this funding package.

"The Park provides visitors with a great insight into the life of one of Scotland's great global cultural icons and to experience the pride, passion and power of Robert Burns.

"Alongside this grant the Executive will be considering in the coming months how best to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Burns' birth. The anniversary, which falls in 2009, and is one of the commitments in the Partnership Agreement, is aimed at encouraging Scots to return to Scotland.

"I look forward to working with partners in the near future in working towards that aim".

Burns National Heritage Park offers visitors a chance to experience the rich heritage of Burns within the environment that inspired his imagination. For more information see http://www.burnsheritagepark.com or phone 01292 443700.

The Park will receive funding of £65,000 in financial year 2003-04, and £50,000 in 2004-05.

The Executive is considering, along with VisitScotland, EventScotland, Scottish Enterprise and VisitScotland, the most appropriate way of commemorating the 250th anniversary of Burns' birth. Further details on each will be provided in due course.
