Appointment to Treasure Trove Advisory Panel

06/01/2004

The appointment of a new Chair to the Treasure Trove Advisory Panel was announced today.

Prof Ian Ralston will serve for four years from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2007. The post is part time and is not remunerated.

Welcoming the appointment, Culture Minister Frank McAveety said:

"The new Chair will bring his considerable experience to the Treasure Trove Advisory Panel.

"The new Chair will have a crucial role in leading the Panel following on from the recently completed review of the Treasure Trove Advisory Panel in Scotland. I look forward to working with him."

The Treasure Trove Advisory Panel advises the Crown's representative in Scotland on whether finds of historical items, made by members of the public, should be acquired on behalf of the nation for allocation to a Scottish museum. The Panel also advises on payments to the finder.

Professor Ian Ralston is a practicing field archaeologist. He has been employed as a University-based academic since 1974, currently at the University of Edinburgh. His research and teaching career has focussed on the archaeology of Britain (especially Scotland) and on temperate Europe (more especially France).

He has directed field work since 1977 and has published reports in both Scotland and France. He has also published extensively on Scottish pre and protohistory, most recently (as editor and contributor) Scotland after the Ice Age (with K. J. Edwards, Edinburgh University Press, 2003). He is currently Non-Executive Chair of CFA Archaeology Ltd and has served as president of the Council for Scottish Archaeology (1996-2000).

The Treasure Trove Advisory Panel is a small specialist Panel which gives
independent advice to the Queen's and Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer, the Crown's representative in Scotland. The Chair and Panel Members are appointed by Scottish Ministers. The Panel consists of up to five Members including the Chair.
