Hogmanay drinking warning

31/12/2003

Party-goers and New Year revellers were today reminded of the dangers of binge-drinking by Chief Medical Officer Mac Armstrong as the nation gears up to celebrate Hogmanay.

Dr Armstrong said:

"Drinking in moderation is fine for the majority of us, but too many people - particularly at this time of year - drink to get completely drunk.

"People who binge drink need to understand that the effects can be serious. It can lead to major long-term health problems. Drink fuelled deaths and injuries devastate friends and family.

"Too often during the festive period, staff in already busy Accident and Emergency departments have an extra load to deal with treating injuries that are a direct result of too much alcohol.

"We can all enjoy the festive period without drinking to excess. I hope people do have fun with friends and enjoy their favourite tipple with good food and entertainment. If you are attending an outdoor event on Hogmanay, wrap up against the cold weather and make sure you plan in advance how you are getting home. And very importantly, if you are going to have to drive this New Year - don't drink at all."
